The Art Gallery of South Australia in
association with the National Gallery of Australia is pleased to present this symposium in
conjunction with the major exhibition, Culture Warriors: The National Indigenous Art
Triennial.
The inaugural National Indigenous Art Triennial presents the work of thirty artists from
each state and territory, demonstrating the incredible range of contemporary Indigenous
art practice. Through a variety of media including painting on bark and canvas, sculpture,
textiles, weaving, new media, photomedia, printmaking and installation, the works selected
create an exhibition of outstanding quality and authority, underpinning the growth and
vitality of indigenous arts practice. This inaugural exhibition has been guest curated by
Brenda L Croft, Senior Curator, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, National
Gallery of Australia.
Guest speakers at the symposium include Brenda L Croft, Senior Curator, Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Art, National Gallery of Australia, Hetti Perkins, Senior Curator,
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Franchesca
Cubillo, Senior Curator, Aboriginal Art and Material Culture at the Museum and Gallery of
the Northern Territory and artists Danie Mellor, Christopher Pease, Daniel Boyd and
Treahna Hamm.
Join us for a stimulating and inspiring journey through the extraordinary world of
contemporary Australian indigenous art.

| The Venue: The symposium will be conducted
in the Radford Auditorium facility at the back of the Art Gallery, with access via
laneways between the Art Gallery, the University of Adelaide and South Australian Museum. |

| Presenters |
Brenda L Croft
Brenda L Croft is a member of the Gurindji and Mudpurra peoples of the Northern Territory.
She is curator of the inaugural National Indigenous Art Triennial and is Senior Curator of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
She has been involved in the Indigenous and Australian visual art/culture industry since
the early 1980s, as an artist, writer, arts administrator and consultant. She is a
founding member of Boomali Aboriginal Artists Cooperative Ltd.
Hetti Perkins
Hetti Perkins is a member of the Eastern Arrente and Kalkadoon Aboriginal communities. She
is the Senior Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art at the Art Gallery of
New South Wales.
Franchesca Cubillo
Franchesca Cubillo is a member of the Larrakia, Bardi, Wadaman and Yanuwa nations. She is
Senior Curator, Aboriginal Art and Material Culture at the Museum and Art Gallery of the
Northern Territory, Darwin. She previously held senior positions with Tandanya, National
Aboriginal Cultural Institute and the South Australian Museum, Adelaide and the national
Museum of Australia, Canberra.

Daniel Boyd
Kudjla/Gangalu peoples, far North Queensland; lives and works Blue Mountains, New South
Wales.
Christopher Pease
Minang/Wardandi/Balardung/Nyoongar peoples, Western Australia; lives and works Perth,
Western Australia.
Danie Mellor
Mamu/Ngagen/Ngajan peoples, Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland; lives and works
Canberra, Australian capital Territory.
Treahna Hamm
Yorta Yorta people, Victoria: lives and works Albury, Victoria.
