About The Foundation

The Art Gallery of South Australia Foundation was established in 1981, and its objectives are to encourage appreciation of art and to raise funds to ensure that the Art Gallery is able to continue to acquire high quality works of art. Many works of art acquired through the Foundation, remain the highlights of the collections today.
The Foundation Chairman says: "We still have some way to go before we could claim to have representation from all the world's historic cultures, but only by the continued open-handed spirit of our donors will we achieve our goals. We aim not to acquire artworks merely to augment the existing presentation, but rather do we aspire to add only those pieces which could materially enhance and enrich its own standards of excellence”.

Foundation Membership

The Foundation is the philanthropic and fundraising body of the Gallery, which depends entirely on the generosity of our Members, and the public alike, to support the Gallery in its desire to make significant additions to our present Collection. The Gallery's collection has been almost entirely built from donations of works of art, financial donations and Foundation membership funds to acquire works of art.

The Collectors' Club
The Collectors' Club has been established for donors to take up the challenge to continue the benefactions of past philanthropists, whilst also taking part in the Collectors' process. Each Foundation member (individual or corporate) can pay $5 000 to join the Collectors' Club per year. Membership may be for only a year, or on an ongoing basis.
The Collectors' Club meet as a group at the Art Gallery for a dinner, where Club members will choose form a variety of works already selected by the Director and Curators. At the dinner the Curators will speak about the works pointing out the historical background and the relevance of each work to the Collection. Club members will then vote on works they would prefer to be in the Collection, and have their name permanently associated with the work of art.
Works presented would be from Australia, Europe or Asia and could be paintings, sculpture, works on paper and decorative arts.
Buddha
Each work purchased will be at the lower price range of major Gallery acquisitions, between about $20,000 up to $50 000. All members of the Collectors' Club, whether individual or corporate, will be acknowledged as donors for the particular work of art purchased, that is, on the label and credit line for the work, acknowledged on the donors' board in the entrance vestibule, in the Foundation Annual Report of wherever the work is reproduced. Every work purchased through the Collectors' Club will, where possible, will be on permanent display. All donations to the Collector's Club are fully tax deductible.

The concept of the Foundation Collectors' Club has been designed to enable supporters of the Gallery to contribute directly to the purchasing of works of art. All funds given by the donor will also be credited to their current Foundation membership, which may enable the donor to be upgraded to the next higher level of Foundation membership.
This is a wonderful opportunity to be able to present our community with a gift, which will bear your name in perpetuity.

Gifts and bequests

Have you considered leaving a legacy to the Art Gallery of South Australia?

We use the Art Gallery of South Australia to learn from the past, understand the present – but it is our responsibility to shape the collection for a sustainable future. It must be acknowledged that gifts of money and bequests have been the most important factor in determining the scope and quality of the Gallery’s present day collections.

Our collections have been significantly enhanced by the vision and commitment of past and present benefactors – either during their lifetime or through a bequest. In fact over 90 per cent of our collections have been built from private sources. The magnificent heritage Elder Wing bears the name of one of the Gallery’s greatest benefactors, Sir Thomas Elder.

Many people believe that they have to be wealthy to leave money or assets in a Will but this is not true. Bequests both large and small are vital as they add up to significant funds to support our State Gallery.

Bequests come from people without relatives or dependants as well as individuals with loving families.

A gift can include shares, real estate, money or nominate the Art Gallery as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. A gift can be the whole or residual of an estate after providing for loved ones.

Each year the Art Gallery of South Australia reaches out to hundreds of thousands of people who visit our permanent collections or temporary exhibitions to learn more about our cultural heritage.

If you would like a copy of the Art Gallery’s publication on Bequests, please contact our Foundation office on (08) 8207 7040 or email: delorme.kerry@artgallery.sa.gov.au
