Elder Wing
The Elder Wing of Australian Art is now open to the public after being beautifully refurbished to celebrate the Gallery’s 130th anniversary. New displays of Australian pre-colonial, colonial and early twentieth-century art have been unveiled including twenty spectacular new, multi-million dollar works gifted to the Gallery in honour of its anniversary.

Melrose Wing Closure
The Melrose Wing is currently closed to visitors. It is planned that the Melrose Wing will undergo a major refurbishment and will remain closed to visitors in 2012.

During the closure, the Gallery will take the opportunity to clean and conserve a number of European paintings from its collection and plan fresh collection displays.

Throughout the Melrose works program selected works from the European collection will be on display in Gallery's 9, 10 and 11. Visitors to the gallery can also enjoy the Aboriginal, Australian, Asian and contemporary collections as well as special exhibitions, the bookshop and restaurant.

The Collection
The Gallery's outstanding collection of 38,000 works of art comprises Australian, European, North American and Asian works including paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, textiles, furniture, ceramics, metalwork and jewellery.
The comprehensive collection of Australian art from the time of European settlement in the early nineteenth century to the present day, including one of the most important collections of Indigenous art.

The European collection spans the Renaissance to today, and the Asian collection covers twelve countries with galleries dedicated to the art of Southeast Asia, India, Japan and the only dedicated Islamic gallery space in Australia.
