Krishna and visions of Sri Nathji
presents Indian temple paintings from the collection of Barrie and Judith Heaven seen for the first time in Australia. The cloth hangings, known as picchavi, include monumental works of art intended for shrine settings. Picchavi are intimately linked with the worship of the Lord Krishna and depict events from his life related to ceremonial occasions and the seasonal calendar.

Expressions in Clay: 125 years of Japanese Ceramics

Expression in Clay highlights the uncanny skill of Japanese artists to create objects that traverse the realms of utilitarian wares and decorative beauty while articulating the complexities of their search for a modern identity in a period of immense change. The exhibition, which spans the late nineteenth century to contemporary times, presents rarely seen works from the collection as well as ceramics from the Hamilton Art Gallery and private collections.

NEW! showcases 23 recent acquisitions that demonstrate Australia's dynamic and innovative contemporary craft practice, which is recognised internationally for its excellence. The exhibition includes works in ceramic, glass, jewellery, silverware, woven figures and textiles, with a number of works created by contemporary Aboriginal artists.

Islamic Art

Gallery 19b | Admission: Free 

The Islamic gallery is the only one of its kind in Australia. The display currently features ceramics from the tenth to twentieth centuries from Iran and Turkey together with silverware from Mughal India. A recently donated and very rare Indian painting depicting a portrait of the Prophet Muhammad is now on display for the first time.
