M.J.M. Carter Collection:
The Joy of Giving
10 November 2006 - 4 February 2007
Max Carter AO is one of the Art Gallery of South Australia's most significant benefactors. Gifts
from his collection have enhanced the Gallery's holdings of British and Asian art, and have
dramatically transformed the Gallery's colonial Australian art collection to make it one of the
most outstanding and most representative such collections in the country. Among his many gifts are
important colonial Australian works by John Glover, Eugene Von Guérard, S.T. Gill and Nicolas
Chevalier. This exhibition, which is mounted in honour of Mr Carter's 80th Birthday, brings
together many of the major gifts from the M.J.M. Carter Collection, revealing the full extent of
his generosity over four decades.
