OCCUPIED TERRITORY
Open from 14 July 2017

Australia was 'occupied territory' when claimed by Europeans in the late eighteenth century - home to hundreds of Aboriginal nations. The colonisers in turn believed that they had 'occupied' territory, claiming the expansion of the British empire into antipodes.

This display presents works of art from the Gallery's collection by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artists who are keen to assert the sovereignty of First Nations and examine the legacy of colonisation.
