Love from Damascus: The Eight States of Devotion

This half-day symposium will present and discuss the Eight States of Love (Marātib al-Muḥabba) as described by the leading 18th-century Syrian poet, scholar, and mystic ‘Abd al-Ghanī al-Nābulusī (1641-1731). Scholars from Australia and overseas will offer personal readings of the eight states of love and discuss their relevance to art, society and human nature, presenting unique cross-cultural insights into a topic close to the heart of each person.
