  • WALL LABEL: A Beautiful Line: Italian prints from Mantegna to Piranesi, 2012

     

    The Florentine Cristofano Robetta was trained in the craft of goldsmithing, the historical antecedent of engraving. His art combines both original and eclectic elements. The composition of this print, for example, is taken freely from Filippino Lippi’s painting of 1496, however Robetta limited the number of participants and introduced the angels. This approach was common for early Italian engravers, who often reproduced the work of other artists or created a composite image based on workshop models, drawings or paintings.
