The Gallery's extensive Australian (Aboriginal and non Aboriginal), Asian and European collections and its diverse calendar of special exhibitions are on call to resource curriculum programs in unique and dynamic ways.


Schools support program

Teaching

Teaching sessions for school students R - SACE conducted by the Education Officer or Volunteer Education Guides related to the following broad areas :

Art
world, traditions, history, industry, the artists, ideas and language - traditional to contemporary.

Society
art works as windows on history and social systems.

Culture
cultural identity, belief systems and traditions.

Environment
relationship with nature and the environment documented or expressed through art.

Ideas
individual voices, imagination, expression and communication.

Technology
art documenting technological change and art as the product of technology.

Science
art and artists extending understanding of ; the changing earth, the cycles of life and living, the material world and relationships with nature.

Teaching sessions may take the form of a 30 minute introductory tour,
or a 45 minutes syllabus-specific floor lecture for more senior students.

Meet the Gallery plus ...

Teaching sessions with the Education Officer or Education Guides often incorporate components aimed at familiarising students with the Gallery and developing skills in concepts and art-based research. They are:

getting to know and use the Gallery (from reception)

Learning to Look
learning to unpack art works (primary - junior secondary)

Visual Thinking
usually extended workshop sessions: all levels

Artsearch
developing art-based research skills for cross-curriculum application (usually 1 hour plus sessions / workshops: upper primary - secondary)

Student research
There is only ONE Education Officer at the Gallery. Research and advisory support is offered for SACE students undertaking special studies. Requests for research assistance must be in text form (letter / fax / email NOT BY TELEPHONE). Allow a response time of 3 - 4 weeks. SACE students need to lodge requests BY THE END OF AUGUST. It is expected that metropolitan students will have visited the Gallery prior to making a request, to establish if any work or group of works is relevant to the research topic.

THE EDUCATION OFFICER IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR ON-SITE INTERVIEWS
Education Services lacks the resources to respond to non Gallery - specific surveys and requests for general biographical and art-historical information.

Collection access and Print Room tutorials
Small groups of senior students are permitted to view works not on public display These include prints, drawings and photographs. Only a limited number of  tutorial access sessions are available each term with the Education Officer.

Professional development for teachers
In relation to current exhibitions, introductory and specialised training for teachers
R-SACE are organised to provide information and to develop skills in accessing and using the Gallery's resources.

Advisory service for individual teachers
Group sessions for teaching staff - introduction to the Art Gallery as a
cross-curriculum resource (usually between 10.00 - 5.00pm, Monday to Thursday
by arrangement). Exhibition briefings for teachers (usually 4.30 - 6.30pm - notified through the Art Gallery Education Services Newsletter or online).

Curriculum - specific workshops and mini courses (program by negotiation).

Website information service
This service involves assisting course writers and project officers developing curriculum materials to choose and access works from the collection . Ask about current resources when making a booking.

Booking a visit
All schools intending to visit the Art Gallery are required to book through Education Services. Some Gallery areas are in high demand and booked groups have priority access. The Gallery only has one Education Officer and requests for conducted teaching sessions should be lodged as early as possible. Check availability of focus works, as the collection hang is subject to change.

Self-guided visits can often be supported by materials such as Topic Trails and Key Works notes (allow three weeks' lead time).
