| About the Exhibition John
Glover has long been regarded as the father of Australian landscape painting.
He was the only major European artist to migrate to Australia before the gold rushes of
the 1850s and is without doubt the most important Australian landscape painter of the
early colonial period. John Glover and the Colonial Picturesque is a major
retrospective which celebrates the two-hundredth anniversary of permanent European
settlement in Tasmania in 2004. It comprises some 115 oil paintings, watercolours,
sketchbooks and prints and will begin with a re-examination of Glovers forty-year
career in England before he immigrated to Tasmania.
Glover was a well known painter of the
English Regency, in fact one of the most successful artists of his day. Nevertheless, it
is his Australian paintings that are his finest and will ensure his lasting fame. In these
late works, painted when the artist was in his sixties, he invigorates the European
classical tradition and eighteenth-century conventions with bright antipodean light, the
colours and forms of Australian native vegetation and the traditional customs of the
Aboriginal people. They are among the most important landscapes made outside Europe in the
1830s. Glovers A view of the artists house and garden, in Mills Plains, Van
Diemens Land is one of this Gallerys best-loved works. John Glover and
the Colonial Picturesque places this and other treasured paintings from the
Gallerys collection into a rich and comprehensive context.
