about the exhibition

Celebrity style, glitz and glamour will be on display at the Art Gallery of South Australia when Australians in Hollywood opens on 11 November. Touring from the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, this photographic exhibition showcases over one hundred portraits of Australian film professionals, ranging from actors to special effects designers. The exhibition also provides a rare opportunity to see two original Oscar statuettes which were awarded to John Truscott in 1967 for Best Costume Design and Best Art and Set Direction for the 1967 film Camelot.

Baz, Cate, Eric, Mel, Naomi, Nicole, Geoffrey and Russ will be there. So also will stars from the past, including Annette Kellerman from the silent film era of the 1910s, who first gained notoriety in 1907 when she was arrested for wearing a one-piece bathing suit which revealed an ‘indecent’ proportion of her arms and legs; the charismatic playboy, Errol Flynn; cameraman Damien Parer who was Australia’s first Oscar winner in 1942 for his wartime documentary, Kokoda Front Line; the costume designer, Orry-Kelly, who won three Oscars in the 1950s and remains Australia’s most prolific Oscar winner; and George Lazenby who is the only Australian to have played James Bond, although he is perhaps more notoriously known as the actor who turned down subsequent Bond roles for fear they would be detrimental to his career (he subsequently conceded that he acted on bad advice).

Australians in Hollywood celebrates the role and influence of Australian film professionals on the American film industry, from the silent film era through to the present day, and promises to be an exciting and memorable exhibition.
