| ABOUT THE 2004 ADELAIDE BIENNIAL OF
AUSTRALIAN ART
Since its inception in 1990, the Adelaide Biennial has
developed and sustained a role as the nations pre-eminent survey of contemporary
Australian art. Presented every two years in conjunction with the Adelaide Festival of
Arts, the Adelaide Biennial highlights new and exciting trends in contemporary visual art
and is the Festivals premier visual arts event.
In 2004 the Biennial presents cutting-edge works of
contemporary photo-media. The works, most of which are being exhibited for the first time,
span the spectrum of photographic practice from photography to digital imagery, video and
new media.
Among the video installations is a collaborative piece by
Adam Geczy and Peter Sculthorpe, as well as works by Destiny Deacon, Virginia Fraser,
David Haines, Tracey Moffatt, Mike Parr, Patricia Piccinini, David Rosetzky and Linda
Wallace. Craig Walsh has created a site-specific projection work. New photographic works
by artists Destiny Deacon, James Geurts, Bill Henson, Derek Kreckler, Rosemary Laing, Liu
Xiao Xian, Deborah Paauwe, Darren Siwes, Silvia Vélez, Justene Williams and Bronwyn
Wright also feature. The artists address issues relevant to contemporary life, including
globalisation, recent world conflicts, self-image and identity and our relationship to the
environment.

TALKS & LECTURES
Saturday 28 February
2 4 pm
Biennial Artists Talks
Selected artists from the 2004 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art give free
talks about their works in the exhibition:
| 2 pm |
Destiny Deacon
Melbourne-based artist whose photographs and videos explore indigenous issues
with her characteristically 'blak' humour. |
|
|
| 2.30 pm |
Craig Walsh
Brisbane-based artist whose site-specific projections in non-traditional spaces
surprise and intrigue. They often reverse the roles of the work of art and the viewer,
with works that literally 'observe' the audience. |
|
|
| 3 pm |
Silvia Vélez
Transforms the ubiquitous 'post-it notes' into a work with stunning visual
impact, created in response to global anti-war protests. |
|
|
| 3.30 pm |
Adam Geczy
Examines the tragic history of Port Arthur in an immersive, evocative
installation of haunting video imagery and music. |
|
|
4 pm
|
Bronwyn Wright
Explores the interaction of landscape, abandoned cars and youth culture at 'The
Swamp', a tidal mudflat on the outskirts of Darwin. |
