About the Exhibition
The Twentieth Century was a revolutionary
period for design with extraordinary architects, artists and designer-makers in every
decade creating unique and stylish items of furniture.
This exhibition presents more than forty items of furniture
from the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia, including some of the
worlds most famous international designers: Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Alvar Aalto,
Frank Gehry, Marcel Breuer, Charles & Ray Eames and Donald Judd. Their classic works
are displayed alongside those by important Australian designers such as: Walter Burley
Griffin, Clement Meadmore, Grant Featherston, Schulim Krimper and Marc Newson.
Other highlights include rare items of South Australian
furniture, such as GM Holdens remarkable furniture of the 1930s, brilliantly crafted
by Holden workers using automotive materials, 1920s redgum chairs made from Trans
Continental railway sleepers, produced at the Flinders Ranges Angorichina Workshop and
innovative one-off works by contemporary Adelaide designers Khai Liew and Peter Moritz.
