About the exhibition

AUSTRALIAN SURREALISM: The Agapitos/Wilson Collection

Surrealism was one of the most dynamic and diverse art movements of the twentieth century. Employing dream imagery, poetry and precarious juxtapositions, Australian artists in the 1930s and early 1940s responded to European Surrealists like Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte, producing distinctive results. Many of Australia’s best known artists of the period embraced the movement and are represented in this major exhibition: James Gleeson, James Cant, Russell Drysdale, Jeffrey Smart, Max Dupain, Adrian Feint, Ivor Francis, Donald Friend, Robert Klippel, Joy Hester, Dusan Marek, Sidney Nolan, Douglas Roberts, Peter Purves Smith, Eric Thake and Albert Tucker.

Philanthropists and art lovers James Agapitos and Ray Wilson have been passionate collectors of Australian Surrealist paintings, photographs, prints and drawings, since making their first acquisition in 1990. Their collection of over 300 Surrealist works is unrivalled by any other public or private collection. Australian Surrealism: The Agapitos / Wilson Collection presents 90 highlights from the collection displayed publicly for the very first time at the Art Gallery of South Australia.
