The photography of H.H. Tilbrook

The significant but little known early South Australian photographer Henry Tilbrook (1848-1937) is to be brought to public attention in the first ever exhibition of his work.

During the 1890s and 1900s Tilbrook journeyed throughout South Australia to places as far afield as the Flinders Ranges, the Coorong and Mount Gambier. His exquisite images depict the varied landscapes he saw, as well as portraits and records of his companions and campsites. Tilbrook was a highly skilled and experimental photographer who produced his images for the sheer love of it, never selling or exhibiting but often giving away his photographs to friends and those he met on his travels. Fortunately, while on his trips, Tilbrook kept immaculate notes which provide fascinating information about the events surrounding the photographs and the technical difficulties he encountered.

This exhibition is based on the extensive collection of Mr R J Noye, one of the foremost experts of early South Australian photography.
